Main menu Monthly Archives: February 2012 It was not a good year for the Premier League in 2011. After dominating for years, the English Premier League witnessed a number of clubs collapsing from financial problems. In the Champions League, English clubs were once again knocked out in the qualifying stage, as Manchester United were beaten by Basel, while in the Europa League Arsenal were also knocked out by Atlético Madrid, who will face FC Barcelona for the Spanish Cup. In January, Reading went bankrupt, even before its first game of the season, while in May the Italian Serie A clubs were rocked by a scandal that involved at least three clubs, including AC Milan, who bought sports supplements sold by a company linked to the Italian intelligence agency. In August, the Italian judiciary ruled that three clubs, AC Milan, Juventus, and Internazionale, had violated Italian competition rules by using illegal economic measures to prevent loosing key players. In November, Spanish club Valencia was ordered to pay 11 million euros to Real Madrid for tampering with the referees. Not to mention the events of last summer, when Bayern Munich and AC Milan were beaten in the Champions League final, and Chelsea beat the FA Cup, breaking a 72-year tradition that had seen English clubs win every major domestic trophy. While the general media is very biased, the internet has provided some sort of refuge for those who are critical of the system, but now all those sites and blogs are under threat by a whole new wave of companies that are trying to reshape the world in their own image, under the banner of free speech and democracy. Before we take a look at the Premier League 2011/12 season, let’s look back at the past season, and see where it all went wrong: Last season was a good one for the Premier League. Manchester United won the title for the third time in a row and in the Champions League they beat
